Some people still fear wearing wigs - but they're used a lot more than one might think.

While most people in this current age have moved past archaic stigmas about hairpieces and the people who wear them, there are understandably still some people who still feel insecure about using them. As such, as it’s 2023, we’ve provided a list of some celebrities who you might not have known were using a wig or toupee to hide baldness or as a means of personal expression.

John Travolta

The famous actor in Grease (1978) was noticed to unfortunately start showing signs of Male Pattern Baldness (MPB or Androgenic Alopecia) beginning in 1991. His hair length would change frequently in the early 2000s – indicating a use of hairpieces. He’s since felt more comfortable about the condition and chosen to go completely bald in 2019.

Elton John

This famous singer has struggled with his balding for a long time, which was no real secret and could be seen over the years in his album covers. He went through multiple failed hair transplants and had additional factors that contributed to his hair loss from many late nights, alcohol and drug abuse, bulimia and the general stress that came with being in the limelight. He continues to wear wigs and toupees – quite happily too – to this day as he confessed that he is uncomfortable with being bald.

Ben Affleck

The actor has always denied wearing a hairpiece or having undergone transplants, but images on the internet can be found that show unnatural changes in his hairline and length over short periods of time.

Robert Pattinson

Now while the relatively young actor isn’t balding (as far as we currently know) – he and several stars of Twilight were made to use wigs and hair extensions due to having to do reshoots after original filming had already wrapped up. Originally, his character, Edward Cullen was almost going to have to use long hair – which Robert absolutely hated, and ripped out the hair extensions involved. Still, this is one of many where celebrities you might not have expected had to wear a wig for some of their more prominent roles.

Hugh Laurie

Laurie, famous for starring in Blackadder and House, was actually wearing a toupee throughout the latter series, which ended in 2012. He can be seen with a wonderfully thick head of hair in the series, then was shown to have a particularly large bald spot at a film premiere in 2011.

William Shatner

Shatner, famous for playing Kirk in Star Trek was unfortunate to start balding at age 9 and actually wore a wig to the audition. He has however continued to deny his use of rather expensive toupees, but in 2021-2022, at the age of 91, he was also seen leaving a hair transplant clinic in Los Angeles.

Matthew McConaughey

Another famous actor, considered to be one of the most attractive men in Hollywood, known for his sleek hair actually already went bald in the 90s. He claims the way it grew back was with a daily application of a topical ointment, but a surgeon has tried to claim credit for regrowing his mane of hair.

Jude Law

Law has been seen with a prominent receding hairline for a very long time, but it has been clear in recent movies that it has become fuller looking than it probably should, indicating the high likelihood that the actor has resorted (understandably, at the age of 50) to the use of a toupee.

Brendan Fraser

The star that rose to fame with “The Mummy”, the American-canadian actor began to experience loss of hair in the 2000s, clearly seen with his thinning and frizzy crown of hair. He’s now seen with much healthier looking hair, indicating the use of a hairpiece or hair transplants.

Steve Carell

A star of The Office, the actor is yet one of several others who claim to not have obtained a hair replacement system – yet fans online have noted clear indications of his changing hairline and hair health over the years.

Sean Connery

Connery unfortunately much like William Shatner began balding at a very young age. He was completely bald by the time he began to star in the James Bond films and had to wear a wig for the role.

Nicholas Cage

Another sufferer of Androgenic Alopecia or MPB, Cage’s head of hair has also been subject to speculation due to its changes in hairline and health as it progressed over the years. He has also been pictured bald in 2022, though that may have been for one of his upcoming roles.

Female Celebrities

Now this isn’t quite one particular celebrity, but the fact is that most female celebrities use hairpieces all the time. For the actresses, this is usually because of the various amount of roles they have to play in their line of work. Keira Knightley stated that she actually had severe hair loss issues due to excessive use of hair dyes for her various roles. As such, most actresses (or actors even) elect to use a hairpiece to avoid damaging their hair in the long run.

Celebrities Using Wigs

As you can see, hair replacement systems are now in use even by people in positions of fame without doing anything to their repute. As such, why should you or anyone else feel afraid to do the same? Embrace your choice, for your want to look better does not have to be limited by what others think of you.
